hand pump leathers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

There is a hand pump above the well here that needs new leathers. I have bought them but do not know how to install. The "flapper" piece, is the smooth side up or down? Same for the cup piece, up or down. Its beeen 45 years since I messed with one of these pumps.

Mitch I held off answering because I thought someone else would.

All I can tell you about is the cups. The cup sets like a drinking cup, sides up. When the pump handle is lifted this kind of forces the cup through the water, and on the downstroke forces the sides of the cup against the cylinder.

I would assume that the mechanical seal of the flap is on the underneath side, so therefore the smooth side would go down. Water lifts the flap on the downstroke, and closes it on the up stroke. Bet you can figure it out if you really think about it yourself.
