I just bought a low mileage '00 F4s and I am noticing a raw fuel smell as if there is a leak. Is there a known problem of this and/or does anyone know of a logical fix? The bike is still under warranty but the closest dealer is a ways away.

The particular accident you are speaking of wasn't the bikes fault. I believe they took apart the F4 for a photo shoot and did not get all the hoses in check.

My fuel line inside the tank became disconnected and caused me to be stranded. A faulty clamp was deemed the culprit.

But as was said take precaution and have your dealer check the bike over.

I have heard that on the '00 model F4s that there was some sort of fuel line that had to be replaced because it was faulty. I have heard that in some cases it actually burst and sent fuel all over the rear tire while the motorcycle was in motion and caused and accident. I am sure that others on this forum will have more info, but in the meantime, be careful and possibly call the dealer and ask about the fuel line problem. Good Luck.

Man, all I can say is MV sucks my 00 f4 has had the split fuel line, and the fading brakes, you sould have your dealer check it out.

My old 2000 MV had a very similar smell. Although I got away with 4,000 miles with no problems, I'd recommend having it checked out.

With that old 2000, there were two things that happened:

1) When the sidestand broke and the bike tipped over, fuel immediately started leaking from the bike.

2) After that 2000 MV and I were in the accident, the police officer came up to me and asked how to turn off the fuel pump because there was a very strong smell of fuel. The thought crossed my mind that should the bike have exploded, the insurance company would HAVE to declare it a total loss. :) Yes, strange things go through your mind after you've been tossed and rolled around the road.

The good new is that with my new 2002 model, there isn't a smell of fuel even when the bike is hot. However, there is a whistling noise. I believe this is air venting from the gas tank?

OK, the problem was a split, fuel quick disconnect. $31 later(yikes) and the problem was fixed!
