Thailand opens first elephant sperm bank

BANGKOK: The world’s first elephant sperm bank has opened for business after Thai veterinarians solved the problem of keeping pachyderm sperm viable after long periods of freezing, news reports said yesterday.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Prapat Panyachatraksa announced the breakthrough on Thursday, saying it would help ensure the best traits of Thai elephants survive despite a dwindling population.

He said artificial insemination of elephants with sperm from the bank would ease the problem of inbreeding caused by a shortage of bull elephants.

The sperm bank is run by the Elephants Care Assembly, a non-governmental organisation, in Ayutthaya province, north of here.

The Nation newspaper quoted Prapat as saying that for the first time Thai veterinarians had succeeded in preserving elephant sperm for more than 12 hours.

It quoted veterinarian Nikorn Thongthip from Bangkok’s Kasetsart University as saying the bank had succeeded in preserving elephant sperm for as long as two months and 20 days.
