Today, June 2, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Sts. Marcellinus and Peter (Roman, priest and exorcist [named in Eucharistic Prayer I], martyred by beheading in 304)
St. Adalgis of Novara (Irish, monk-priest, hermit in France, c. 686)
St. Blandina (French, slave, martyred by beheading in 177)
St. Bodfan (monk, 7th century)
St. Erasmus of Formiae (Italian, bishop, martyred [disemboweled] in 303)
Pope St. Eugenius I (Roman, priest, elected to papacy in 654, opposed Monothelite heresy, reigned until death in 657)
St. Guy of Acqui (Italian, bishop for 36 years, d. 1070)
St. John de Ortega [Juan] (Spanish, priest, pilgrim, hermit, c. 1150)
St. Nicholas Peregrinus (Greek, walked with cross and cried "Kyrie eleison," died at age 19 in Italy in 1094)
St. Photinus, Sanctius, Vetius, Epagathus, Maturus, Ponticus, Biblides, Attalus, Alexander, and about forty companions (French, bishop and disciples, tortured and martyred [roasted, thrown to animals] in 177)
Bl. Sadoc and 48 companions (Italian and Polish, Dominican missionary priest and disciples, martyred by pagan Tartars in Poland in 1260)
St. Stephen of Corvey (German, Benedictine monk, bishop in Sweden, martyred c. 1075)

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

On this date in 2002, many Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ (sometimes called "Corpus Christi").
Let us pray that all non-Catholics may one day enjoy an authentic faith in the Real and transubstantial Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Eegads. And I thought WE lived in a violent society today. They had some rather unusual means of death back then. Disembowled? Roasted and thrown to animals? Geez louise. How awful!

You are right, Jackiea. But the above just scratches the surface. If you were to look at all the daily saints' threads going back almost ten months, you'd see a horrible catalog of "man's inhumanity to man." So many ways in which the Catholic saints have suffered in union with the crucified Jesus! Some have been ...
hanged,
racked to death,
crucified,
drowned,
stabbed,
beheaded,
burned at a stake,
suspended over a fire,
roasted in a bronze animal,
bludgeoned,
strangled,
hacked to pieces,
disemboweled,
torn by animals,
suffocated by pressure of heavy weights on chest,
etc., etc..

As the saying goes: "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church."

God bless you.
John

Sounds like some of the more modern day sicko serial killers, John.

Lord have mercy.
