Sweetie's Great Adventure

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

Sweetie left in the truck this morning and has just called from Lexington, KY. Seems to be making fairly good time, considering his late-ish start.

Wanted to tell you about the truck--it's a 15-footer and has a little door from the cab to the back. It also has two sets of rails along the sides, about 3' and 6' high, I guess. Anyway, will be perfect for lashing cat cages to the rails! There's natural light from some translucent panels in the roof, like the UPS trucks. And plenty of room for an air mattress for an old git to rest/sleep on when she's tired. . .!

I'd be paranoid driving cross country alone.

I don't think it ever entered Sweetie's mind. He didn't have time to worry about it! He'll be doing it at least one more time. There'll be a visit home in about three months, maybe less, who knows? And he'll take another truck loaded with stuff. Maybe then there'll be ebnough gone so I can start to show the house--if it's spruced up by then.

Btw, I got an e-mail from my vet yesterday in response to my note about Jim's job and move--all it said was, "[real name], that SUCKS!" Bless 'is 'eart, he likes me and my cats.

I imagine you're trying to figure out how to pack the vet for the trip. LOL

-- Anonymous, June 07, 2002

The vet might agree. Afterall, it's enough cats to start a practice...

I'll keep looking northward and wave to every 15-footer that I see. I'm bound to get it! If you talk to your Sweetie while he is on the road, tell him to be safe and have a good enjoyable ride.

apoc might just get a visitor or ten if she stands out there waving at all the truckers. LOL

try not to look too interested, dear.

Ya never know there Barefoot! They might see my thunder thighs and floor the trucks to get them as far away from me as possible. ;)

Let us know when he makes it safely!

Well, Sweetie made it into Colorado Springs Saturday night. He says Kansas sucks, but otherwise the scenery was pretty good, especially West Virginia. Eastern Colorado would have bene boring, except that you can see Pikes Peak from about 70-80 miles out.

Sweetie was resting up yesterday but planned to look for an apartment and a vee-hickle today.

I'm a bit worried about wildfires, fire being the only thing I'm really afraid of. I think the first thing I'll do after we buy a house is have a fireproof roof put on it. From what I can see, there aren't that many brick houses (like here), but that would be a big plus. And maybe a fire hydrant and a fire hose in front, lol. From what I can see, these wildfires tend to wipe out fairly rural areas and not subdivisions in the middle of town. I hope. Guess we won't be having many trees around the house. . .

Where his boss's house is (in a gated community), the fire escape plan is go up the hill to a helicopter pad and wait for rescue. Obviously, we won't be living anywhere NEAR there!!! Besides, no cable TV, no pizza delivery.

Old Git,

Glad that your sweetie made it. Hopefully the fires will stay far far away. I understand the fear of fire very well.

Latest is that Sweetie has found a red Mitsubishi pickup, 1994, umpty- ump thousand miles, but a mechanic checked it for him and it doesn't look bad and only 4k bucks. Eats gas, though (compared to the Honda car we have). He's now looking for an apartment.

Trying to earn his keep at his boss's house, he volunteered for litterbox duties and now the lady of the house wants him to stay forever. Ha!

The CS Fire Dept has come out with a map showing the most vulnerable fire areas in CS, so that will be helpful in deciding where to live.

Drought: we're almost as bad off in Durham. Water restrictions are in effect here, stage 1--no car washing, restricted lawn watering, that sort of thing. Rain today maybe.

I managed to get the kitchen ceiling painted yesterday. Note to prospective painters: mildew-resistant paint is kinda like thick cream, takes some elbow work to get it slapped on. I also painted the fake wood ceiling fan blades in the kitchen. Roughed up a bit with Brillo, cleaned, and then painted white. The fan now looks amazingly good. I had already replaced the fan lights with a modern metal swivel canister light set and even with the brass fittings, the new paint job still looks good, quite smart, in fact. I shall probably be in bed most of the day. . . Besides the chondromalacia, right knee, I now have a Bakers cyst on my left. Don't ask 'cos I WILL tell you.

It's disgustingly hot here--100 degrees yesterday. Record heat again. And Sweetie was saying his boss doesn't have AC up on the mountain, doesn't need it. Then he said he needed to shut the window because it gets cool at night. Aaaaargh!

Allergies: Sweetie, who mainlined nasal spray for the last ten years, has quit cold turkey. I thought he was addicted to the stuff but turns out he really did need it to breathe. Not in CS. His sinuses have completely disappeared, he says. THAT'S good news. Ditto for the Visine.

Picked my first tomato five days ago. Neener neener. Yeah, okay, they pick them all year in Miami, BF, but NOT HERE! July 4th is the test day.

My new neighbors are wonderful and can't understand the locals. I told them about hanging out Jim's knickers and they just howled with laughter. The guy is fixing my wobbly dining room chairs, bless 'is heart.

Apoc, please send address - I have located the dress. Don't know when I can mail it, will have to see when Hungarian next goes to USPS-- usually goes a couple times a month so shouldn't be too long.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2002

You're gonna trust the USPS with your dress?

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2002

Actually, I was thinking of UPS. . .
