Old wagon seat - ? about weatherizing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

I've been working diligently trying to finish planting my little flower/herb garden. I bought picket fencing for $5 an 8'section at a yard sale, ( ceder, new, 30"), and took my step grandson to a nearby development under construction to dumpster dive for 2x4's for fence posts, so that is all finished except for hanging the gate. I was pondering what I would use for a garden bench, when I remembered an old wagon seat I had in storage. Got it out, and it fits like a glove! Yahoooooo!

Now, the question. This buggy seat seems to have it's original paint although worn to a reddish brown patina. What could I use to maintain that look, and yet protect it, and the little bit of metal that goes from the edges of the seats to the back from the weather? The only thing I could think of was to spray it with polyurethane, but that would make it look "shiny"? ? ? Would take away the old patina. Anyone? ? ?

Might check on different kinds of waxes for wood, means that you would have to repeat the treatment, but also it can be taken off later.

I've used a varnish that is called 'hand-rubbed finish'. Works well to keep wood and metal from deteriorating and it looks old. I'd go out to the shed and see who makes it, but there has been a bear hanging around and it is after midnight. Sorry.
