Abortion Rate Rises 11/06/2002 05:10 PM Xtra News

New figures show the number of abortions performed in New Zealand rose 1.9 percent last year, and the abortion rate among the Asian population is 60% higher than the national average.

Statistics New Zealand figures show that in the year 2001, there were 16,400 abortions performed.

That is 300 or 1.9 percent more than in 2000.

A growing proportion of these abortions are repeat abortions. In 2001, 34.0 percent of all abortions were to women who had had one or more previous abortions. This compares with 28.6 percent in 1996, and 23.2 percent in 1991.

The abortion rate (number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years)rose to a high of 19.4 in 2001. New Zealand's abortion rate is higher than that of the Netherlands, Germany, and Finland - all with rates below 11 - but is lower than that of Australia and the United States.

The age group 20-24 years remains the most common age for abortions, accounting for approximately three out of ten abortions in 2001. Women in this age group had the highest abortion rate of 37.5 abortions per 1,000, followed by those aged 25-29 years (26.3) and teenagers aged 15-19 (24.1).

The average age of women having an abortion has risen to 26.5 years.

Ethnic differentials are marked. European women had the lowest abortion ratio (207 abortions per 1,000 known pregnancies) and Asian women the highest (364) in 2001. The Asian women's ratio is about 61% above the national average (226 per 1,000). Maori women and Pacific women recorded abortion ratios of 280 and 255 respectively.

The majority of abortions in any year are to never-married women. These women accounted for around 60 percent of all abortions during the past decade.

Over the same period, the proportion of abortions to married and separated women ( as opposed to never-married women or women in de facto relationships), declined from 30 percent to 24 percent. These changes partly reflect the trends towards fewer and later marriages and the growth of de facto unions.

Dear Kiwi Golem:
God hears you. He feels for you. Babies are born to all the good mothers; and live to reproduce babies. If you have children, before long as I see it, you'll have grandchildren. Assuming you don't already.

God is not mocked, says Saint Paul. If abortion is up, the abortion-oriented population necessarily is depleted. --Uh; I think! But don't worry. The ones who are born will give glory to God someday. It isn't just a vicious circle of abortion. He will stop it in ways we couldn't imagine. The best we can do is pray.

Just remember the woman with the 12 year's hemmorhage; and that faith-- ''Hearing about Jesus she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak. For she said, 'If I touch but His cloak, I shall be saved.' --And at once the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed,--'' (Mark, 5: 27) All the world's evils can be defeated if we have that kind of faith in Our Lord.

Eugene, Your comment seems to endorse a kind of social darwinism, the same line of thought that sees crime statistics going down and concludes that abortion gets rid of unwanted children, ergo, there is some practicle benefit to society when parents aren't stuck with children they don't want.

Walter

What is that mindless rubbish you spewing? This is a Catholic forum not a forum of wannabees as you are. what Gene has said is not darwinism, but real hard facts.

-- Fred Bishop (FCB@heartland.com), June 13, 2002.

Walter,
My comment is simply a reflection on the never-ending mystery of iniquity. I have no solution to what I see as a grave evil in our society. If I had one, I would certainly shout from the housetops. Tell me your solution. Don't you believe in God? Is praying futile?

Is abortion at all defensible from your point of view? The strange effects of selfishness and neurosis in this society are sending some bloodlines to extinction. Why would a potential grandfather/mother approve of culling his own descendents out of the gene-pool?

God should do the genetic engineering, in my opinion. If you have better ideas, I'd like to hear one.

God has commanded me to have faith. I don't have it just for my self-preservation. I have faith because He's promised us that faith in Him will never be disappointed. Even in the valley of the shadow of death.

Hey Guys, I was kidding a little. The truth is, as you said, that abortion is going to reduce the pro-abortion population. The statisticians point out that a reduction in crime is linked

Sorry, Fred, but I go along with Walter here. Eugene's post included the statement:

"If abortion is up, the abortion-oriented population necessarily is depleted."

The only way I can understand that sentence is that it's okay that there are so many abortions, because the babies being aborted would have grown up to be abortion-oriented, therefore it's okay to get them out of the way.

Doesn't sound like a very "Catholic" theory to me.

Of course not, Christine.

I'm not in favor of aborting the babies of sinners.

They are, however, mindlessly changing the demographics. I'm only vaguely aware of a ''balancing'' of the scales. I mull over this, as I said-- on the ''mystery of iniquity'' which won't go away.

It's God who will help us; that's the moral of my sad story. I also stated at the beginning, good mothers are bearing children. We hope these new children will reverse the culture of death in their lifetimes. If God gives them the grace. Why was I at pains to say all this? Because-- the author of our thread was lamenting a rise in abortions. To all action there's a reaction; it's a law.

-- eugene c. chavez (chavezec@pacbell.net), June 14, 2002.

Well, good mothers - or at least, women who WOULD be good mothers, if they could be persuaded to do so - are aborting their children, too.

And bad mothers are having children. Remember Susan Smith?

I am not trying to clamp down on you - seriously. But I think it's a big mistake to try and find ANY "silver lining" or "bright side" in this holocaust which is legalized abortion.

Love, :-)

I don't think I said there's a bright side. I believe in God's side. Without Him, there's no hope, Christine.

how can i put it this is horrific that abortion figures are so high but what if a woman has been raped and is now pregnant the baby is unwanted and also the emotional scars that attached to the rape are also connected 2 the unborn unliving fetus in these seccimstances i thinkkk that abortion should be left open to people to choose as they wish no 1 can change a persons mind on what they want to do

p.s dissing me will only show ur immaturaty

Hello Spots,

Welcome to the site. You write:

"...the emotional scars that attached to the rape are also connected 2 the unborn unliving fetus"

Unliving? Spots, do you really believe that fetuses aren't alive? Honestly, I've never heard that before.

I did a little reading on the 'net and found a couple links regarding rape and abortion:

Link 1

Link 2

Also, here's a number of links connecting to everyday people who know that there's a real live baby growing inside a woman's belly when she's pregnant (despite what some lawyers say). An ultrasound appointment is a wonderful experience to see your baby kicking and moving around. I hope that you get the opportunity some day.

God bless you,

Mateo
