John Stossle did a report the other night about medical research into bioengineering (among other topics) and I say no. I feel that this may lead to cures for some diseases such as Parkinson's but I don't think it's worth the price. I think it would be abused by some (ok maybe lots) to design their babies as well as other abuses beyond my imagination.

Has the science gone too far? When breast implants were first developed it was intended for cancer patients. Now sixteen-year-olds are having the procedure purely for vanity. Ok so I could have a ton of surgery to look young. Freedom of choice and a free market enable such enterprises. But so what? Does all this improve the quality of my life? Of course not.

Medical research finds cures and extends life, so that I can live longer. So what? I may be fatalistic here but please let me die a peaceful death after a full life. I don't want my life extended with drugs and machines. Why do activists demand that all diseases be cured? We need to have a cure for aids and anyone who doesn't think the same is just homophobic. Maybe diseases are a natural part of life; just as lightening strikes which start forest fires. Nature has a way to weed out and thin the population. Should we allow ourselves the same? Just thinking out loud here.
