Anyone Have a Roadside Stand???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

Just wondering if any of you now have or have had in the past, a roadside stand where you sell your veggies, crafts, flowers, etc. If you have, was it profitable and worth the time and effort? Are the laws in your state particular about that sort of thing, or is it pretty easy to do?

Just curious more than anything else. Thanks ahead of time for your response! Hope you're all doing well today and are managing to stay cool!

Phil, I have not had one here, but a friend that lives on a state hwy. puts one out every summer. We sell everything from leftover produce to pumpkins and scarecrows. She makes sure everything is clearly priced and puts out a money jar. We may have lost a few small things, but have never been shorted by a lot. the scarecrows are $20.00 each and she sells 15 - 20 of them this way a year. I think if you live on a road with some traffic a stand is a great way to sell your stuff. Joanie in NW Ohio

"when" I retire,, I figure on doing the roadside stand / farmers market thing, since there isnt any around here,, might take me that long to get the soil good and ready. The closest farmers amrket is 1 hour away,, so I figure it may be worth it.

I do one right off my porch and well house. Even with my limited production this year, I have a few tomatoes, peppers and okra. I concentrated this year on seedling sales. Next season, hope to have the porch stand at full output again. In good years, it would generate about $8 per manpower hour during the season, in bad years as little as $3 per manpower hour.

i was hoping to get into the farmer's market thing or roadside stand in a couple years but now we are planning a newstand shop in town for our business since Richard got downsized. Now I have to forego the market ideas I had. Rats.

when I lived in Japan I frequented little stands that farmers put at the entrance to their homes/farms. it was an honor system deal. produce was clearly priced and you dropped your yen into a little wooden box. no one present to oversee the operation. I loved it. the road we live on now doesn't have much traffic but I was just thinking just today of making a little stand based on that idea and see how it works out. I don't have nearly as much confidence in the honesty of the "public" here when no one is watching but we are in the sticks and if it would work anywhere it would work here. locals are rock solid - strays are, well, we'll see...
