Fall Gardens

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

I've never done as well as I'd like with fall gardens. But now that I'm closer to being settled, gardenwise, maybe I can do well with one this year.

How do you do with your fall garden? I'll be starting broc, cab, plant peas, potatoes, kholrabi, turnips, beets, carrots, peas, greens, Chinese greens, onion sets, and maybe more, and not necessarily in that order. Any suggestions, experiences, know-how? Thanks

Hi Cindy, I've been thinking of the fall garden also. Around here, we usually plant most of it in the middle of August...Potatoes, cabbage and such. The co-op starts selling plants and spuds around that time. I have much better luck with Fall cabbage than Spring cabbage. It's sweeter and not as bad a bug problem. I'm going to put out some more green beans as soon as I get the rest of the current potato crop dug. We're thinking of putting out some turnips, kale, carrots and whatever else I can think of! I like to fall garden...not so darn hot to harvest! :)

Funny, we are preparing a spot for a fall garden also. I am starting the brocoli, cauliflower, cabbage and greens very soon. I am also going to do a thing like stan for some greens into the winter. Our patio area is very sheltered and I think I can keep stuff alive for quite some time there.
