Mysterious Red/Brown Pools south of Foster Citygreenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread |
I was flying from Houston to SF yesterday, and as I looked out the window, I noticed several large rectangular pools (?) with rounded corners. They were the color of flower pots (reddish-brown) and some of them had some whitish color swirled in. What are these things? They look very strange from above.

Salt evaporation ponds.

For more information on the South Bay and the salt industry, read Harold Gilliam's book on San Francisco Bay. Can't remember the exact title.

"Harold Gilliam" brings up 8 hits over at Amazon.com. If you google for just him, you'll find he's quite a well-respected and prolific writer of Bay Area guides (and beyond the bay, too).
