Should the password be changed?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

JOJ has suggested that the password be changed to something that doesn't include numbers. I guess he has to stop and look at the keyboard to enter them. Anyway, I have never attempted to change the password because of what happened to Jim when he first locked us in. I think this current password is what the program generated. When Jim tried to change it, we were all locked out, including him. He was able to go to the administration screen and change it back to this current number. Because of that, I've always been reluctant to mess with it -- though if we were troll attacked, I would go for it.

So my question is, should we change the password at this time? Are we willing to be locked out of here, possibly for awhile if things go wrong? I don't know how long it would take for a response from the "maintainers" of Lusenet.

BTW, anyone notice that Lusenet has not gone down in a long time? I did go over to our alternate site, Where the Sidewalks End, and looked. Last message there was May 23rd.

I don't mind the password as it is. It's not hard to stop and put in the numbers. Besides, do you really think there will be a password that we all will easily agree on that a Troll would not be able to figure out?

No, No, please don't change the password, I've finally learned this one and don't have to look it up each time I want to get on. Besides, if you change it, you might not give it to me.

No, don't change it please.

Unless several other people are having a problem entering the password as it is...please don't change it!! I FINALLY have it memorized and don't even have to look at my keyboard to enter it :-)!! But...I'll change if it will help joj! I could re-memorize...

Hey, no big deal. I'm not having any real trouble! Joy, I'm just surprised that the password was so weird to start with! I'd think a simple word like "peace" or something would be just as hard for a hacker to figure out as our current password.

Not worth a hassle, though. Leave it like it is, if there's a chance of some problem.

Actually, a password should be an alphanumeric combination as unique appearance is a simplistic approach to discovering a password. While working networks, my first hit at hacking passwords of terminated employees non network units was to scan the microcode for unique code like "hemmoroid", "peace", "sex","password" (this is easy as it should only turn up once by itself in the microcode ), etc. Words that did not belong in a coding program. Alphanumeric sequences and microcode common words required sequencer codekey programs to break. Also alphanumeric combinations allow a larger base operator as alpha sequences are base 26 as opposed to base 10.

I would suggest either leaving it as is or changing it annually and retaining the alphanumeric characteristic.

The IT squad here at work has made us change all of our passwords to alphanumeric combinations because they're harder to crack. I would prefer to leave the password as it is. I think that there are folks who only check in here periodically and I'd hate for anyone to be accidentally left behind. I know that when we first went to a password the email that Jim sent to me with the password got lost in cyberspace and I couldn't get into the forum for a week or so. I was very bummed because I thought you all didn't like me anymore. :)

I agree with what Jay said in his last paragraph...........the rest of what Jay said might as well be Inuit for all I understood.

EM. I don't know what country Jay is from but I suspect that English is his second language. I'm pretty sure that he still thinks in his original language and is trying to translate his thoughts into English, word for word and that's why we're confused. In some languages, a word expresses a concept and doesn't translate word for word into our language. I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Jay's post. I might be wrong but I don't think so because I didn't understand much of it and I can understand almost anything. If it's explained to me, that is.

Good luck with your English courses, Jay and welcome to America.

Wildman, (trying to understand)

Sorry folks. I am a computer technical support engineer with IT and in-plant network support background (yes I have a couple of pocket protectors and can do logirythms on a "slip stick" :>). What I said was a number/letter password helps prevent the password from looking like a billboard with lights to a troll or hacker. :>)

Thanks,Jay! Now that didnt hurt too much did it? :)

Jay...you are a "fascinating" person! In this post I need a dictionary to decipher what you're talking about...and yet...you are the "worm king" on another post!!!! Absolutely amazing :-)!!

I understood what Jay said perfectly: he said that there are millions of hackers trying desperately to break our code, in order to steal all our secrets about growing worms and such...

Thank you all for the comedy routine! If it weren't so obskew and board specific, I would suggest you take it on the road and make money! ;-D
