Layouts to visit

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I checked the model railroading section and didn't see this addressed but may be overlooking. Does anyone in our readership have or know someone who has modeled the ACL (any area) early diesel era to the present (possible a club layout) that would allow an individual to view the layout with trains running or operating? I am willing to travel as there are very few if any layouts in my area that i know of. Of course viewing would be at the convenience of the owner(s). I figured there might be other readers who wonder the same thing. I know there are individuals or clubs who model the Southern Rwy. or other fallen flags.

Hey. I'm a member of the Coastal Rail Buffs here in Savannah, GA and our club layout is based on downtown Savannah and around town. It supposed to be based on the old CofG mainline but we do run ACL. We are doing some work on the layout to get it ready for more prototype operations. Our meetings are Thursdays around 6pm. If you come you should be allowed into the display but don't hold me to it. I hope this helps! Jason

I don't know of any ACL layouts. If you are interested in Southern/NS, the Apple Valley RR is an excellent one to visit. It's an HO layout located in the old Southern depot at Hendersonville, NC. They run on Saturday and are open to the public, no admission charge. They have done an excellent job of modeling Saluda grade, Asheville, etc., and sometimes have 3-4 trains running simultaneously.
