Seeking names of AME Churches in New Orleans, LA

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

One of our graduates is entering Xavier University in New Orleans this fall. I was asked to get the names of AME Churches in the area of the university. I have been unable to find any church located in New Orleans on any of our websites.

Anyone having information on AME Churches in New Orleans please post here or you may send me a personal note.

Thanks for your help.

Union Bethel is located not too far from downtown, where I believe Xavier is situated. Rev. Thomas Benjamin Brown, Jr. is the pastor.

Thanks, Bro. Payne for the information. Having never been to New Orleans myself and not being able to find a sight for that Episcopal District, I just knew someone on this BB had the info that we needed to help this young man.

As far as I can tell from the maps of New Orleans I've seen, the university is in the downtown area. So, again thanks for your help. If there are others of you who know of other churches within close proximity of Xavier University, do not hesitate to post that information. All responses are greatly appreciated.

One of the oldest AME Churches in the nation is also located in downtown New Orleans. The Church is Saint James AME and it is historically connected to the first of only four African Americans who have ever served in the US Senate--Rev Hiram Revels. It is also connected, I believe, to the only black Governor of Louisiana, PBS Pinchback. So please check out Saint James as well as Union Bethel.

Bro. Matthews,

Thanks, thanks, thanks. I've already called both Union Bethel and St. James and got their addresses and other pertinent information. I found out that St. James is approximately 2 miles from the university and Union Bethel is 3 miles away. What I didn't know was that St. James is a church with historical significance.

Again, thanks Robert and Jerryl.

Bill, I love gumbo and jambalya and all of that spicy LA food. If I were going, I'd have to stop off in the capital of "T" and bring you a bowlful of gumbo. Sorry, next time.

Okay, brothers and sisters of New Orleans, surely there are other AME churches in your fair city. If so, would you share the names and locations with us?

Greetings to you. I am a member of Union Bethel, and like several AME churches in our city, we have several students from XU and other local colleges and universities that are under our care during their college years. We provide transportation for them as well as a Sunday meal. Many universities only serve lunch and because of the worship time - they often miss the scheduled meal. Our members extend themselves as well inviting students to dine with their families on a Sunday afternoon. There are several of our churches that would extend themselves as well in providing transportation and fellowship, so I would not make distance a major factor. In most of the churches, I know there is a designated member that keeps contact with the students. Since you have made contact with my church, Union Bethel and Historical St. James, I will list others. Morris Brown - 1813 Urquhart St (504) 948-2165 Bethel Caffin Ave - 1437 Caffin Ave (504) 945-5185 Cummings Temple - 11001 Chef Menteur Hwy (504) 242-9747 St. Peter 3424 Eagle St (504) 482-5418 (St. Peter's is one bus ride and walking distance from XU for someone who likes to walk) THE 8TH DISTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE IS located at 2138 St. Bernard Ave (504) 948-4251 BISHOP C. Garnett Henning http://www.amec3000.org/8th_District THE 8th is the BEST OF THE BEST - STRIVING STILL TO BE BETTER YET!, and we here in New Orleans extend to you and yours open arms in love and fellowship where ever you chose to worship.

What a beautiful response from Danice Faulkner-Edwards. My daughter will be applying to colleges soon, and I pray that wherever she goes there will be a response as such for her. God bless you all.

Yes, Mary, Sis Edwards response was indeed a touch of class. However, she failed to talk about that great NO cuisine. I'll be in the Big Easy in a few weeks and rest assured I am going to find me some gumbo, probably the restaraunt that Bryant Gumble frequents near the French Quarters. I'll stop by Union Bethel after I have sufficiently dined :-) QED

Brother Bill has announced that he will be in new orleans in a few weeks, that is his not so subtle way of saying "FEED ME!" so my sister and brothers in New orleans I am asking that the A.M.E churches in the big easy feed brother Bill. Now he is from the 11th district and I guess they don't feed him back home;-) So please have pity on him. Hmm I think he also went through the 19th district, we are still waiting to hear if the 10th fed him. Thank you New Orleans for feeding a starving professor aka Bill Dickens. Oh if he eats to much send the bill to Bro. Bob McCain in the first district (heehee)

oops the above post should read "he went through the 10th district" though the 19th should also start preparing to have a banquet for him too;-)

Ah!! Sis. Edwards, thank you for the information that you shared. I will be able to give his parents peace of mind that their son will be under the watch care of not only a loving God but brothers and sisters of our denomination who also care.

I'm seeking your prayers for him and his family. He will be leaving Tampa on August 16th.

Bill, since I won't be going to the Big Easy and you will, if you don't eat all of the jambalya, would you just bring me a bowlful?

Thanks to all of you. If there's anything else I need to know, like Bill ate you out of a house and home, let me know and we're try to work on his appetite before he leaves the 11th district.

I find it truly amazing how someone like me with a svelte and sculptured body frame can be mislabled as a food-aholic (is this a word?). I am simply carrying out the Biblical commands in Genesis to have dominion over the fowl, fish and land creatures who chew the cud but do not part the hoof. What my mountain sister selectively omits is my resistance to engage with her in wild venison and untamed wilderness animals like, caribou, elk, moose and I believe, bear. Now I know such eating is an "acquired taste", but I thought the science of food processing has liberated us all from primitive prairie selections. Oh well, as has been documented I will be traveling west and do intend to sample food on every stop. Many thanks to all the "hospitality warnings" since my entire family will be joining me along the trip. For those who may not know or have a lapse in memory, I am an officer in the AMEC, so since I will be representing Bishop Adams in his absence, protocol warrants that my meals be served on fine china, polished silverware, snow white linen and crystal drinking glasses. Ahhh.... protocol does have its benefits :-) QED

Brother Bill, you are not off the hook from eating elk, moose, buffalo and rainbow trout in Montana! Buffalo is delicious!! And I have been praying that you and Jenny will come and visit Montana so we can take you and the kids to Yellowstone National Park. Which we call the neighborhood park. It is so close to my town. Bill Bozeman is a tourist and ski resort plus college town. So we have all the amenities of the big city. Though our town has only 30,000 people we have our own airport with 5 major airlines flying in. Tom Brokaw, Ted Turner, Michael keaton, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Fonda and other celebs have homes here. I have already told our football coach about you and he and the Montana State Football team are awaiting your arrival, the coach is a great cook and they are members of our church and will cook for you. If you have a digital camera please take pictures to show us of your visit to new orleans. You know I tease you because you and Jenny are family;-)
