Two years ago, the future of Nash Finch Co. looked dicey. The Edina-based food wholesaler and retailer was losing money, it faced bigger and stronger competitors and it lagged in such basics as on-time deliveries. Its new $30 million computer system wasn't even Y2K-compliant. Today, after major shifts in leadership, corporate culture and strategic direction, the company is on firmer footing. Yet it still faces many challenges: Does it have the resources to become a dominant grocery retailer in the Upper Midwest? Is it big enough to ensure survival amid industry consolidation? And will its focus on smaller communities give it the business volume it needs?
