The reason that stekelenburg is playing in young ajax is because the match against young utrecht is a very important one. Ajax does that sometimes when young ajax or the reserve team have a difficult match, ajax will give players from the first the permission to help the reserve team or young ajax win. It has nothing to do with the skills of maarten that he was send to the young team, but because of the importants of that match. Maarten is still the best goalkeeper of ajax en he will be back in the first team. Mark wy words.

Ah - the Young Ajax game on Monday is a game for the Amstel Malt Cup (= Amstel Cup for reserves teams) against young FC Utrecht. So Maarten Stekelenburg will play that one.

Just read the Ajax.nl match report of the NEC game. It says that there's some competition coming up for Joey Didulica. Maarten Stekelenburg is fit again. He will return to action with Young Ajax on Monday night. I didn't know Young Ajax is playing on Monday. The Young Ajax matches schedule on Ajax.nl says they're playing on Thursday 21 November, at home against Young Vitesse. Either way: Stekelenburg will be in the Young Ajax goal this week. Check back to the Young Ajax thread for match details.

I like Maarten and I believe he will be a very good one, but it's definitely not true that he is already better than Van der Sar. That's just a little bit too much...

But I like him!

Dear Ajax fans,

Without a doubt Maarten is one of the best Ajax talents to come out of the Ajax youth system. My question is not really related to Maarten but more to Goalkeeping and especially jerseys. I collect Ajax and Dutch national team jerseys. If you have any that you wouldn't mind departing with please contact me via Email. If you are interested in seeing my present collection you can email me too. I am working on setting up a website to display them.

There is no question in my mind that Maarten Stekelenburg has earned the starting spot. His performances in the last three pre-season matches, especially in light of the fact that the defense hasn't always been as solid as it needs to be, have spoken volumes as to why he should start.#31 should be the #1 barring play on the scale of Massimo "The Venetian Blind" Taibbi(sp?).

I agree with you Menno and welcome back by the way! Stekelenburg is very quick and agile and to top that he is young so theres room for improvements! the injury of Didulica and Lobont probably serves as a blessing in disguise for Ajax...who knows what greatness could Stekelenburg bring to Ajax.

I say: Maarten in goal. Not Timmer. It's great to have an experienced goalkeeper on loan as back-up, but I really think Maarten deserves to start against FC Utrecht!

Yes, he can play with the ball, just like van der Sar can, but I think he could have been better off if he was better in the air at crosses, and weaker with the ball at his feet.

I am in total agreement with Carlo's remarks.I would also say that Maarten Stekelenburg has got progressively better since I first saw him with Jong Ajax 2 years ago.And he was pitching shutouts then. He played a very confident, sure-handed match. He also showed two good feet. His first half laying out before the on-rushing van Nistlerooy and get the body on the ball to clear it save was awesome. His second- half twin-fisted while his body was at a 45 degree angle stop also showed both skill and confidence.

His 6'3" and thin build make comparisons to van der Sar inevitable. His skills may well make those same comparisons prophetic.

What a talent we have here!!! After his superb performance against ManU im pretty sure he is going to stay for quite some time now between the post especially Didulica and Lobont is out for the moment...Stekelenburg is really calm and in control in that game, another van der Sar on the way guys!!!

Man, after watching his pre-game interview, it's not only his soccer-style that's similar compared to van der Sar, same goes for his personality. Short, clear answers, knows what he wants, and just how to get it. Seems like a really smart kid too, hope Lobont stays injured as long as Stekelenburg needs to develop to surpass Lobont. (If he hasn't done that already)

So, he's our (only...) man for the Amsterdam Tourney. I've only seen him play a full game for Ajax-1 one time (at Norwich), plus a handful for Young Ajax, last season (Amstel Cup as well). But I must say I've been *very* impressed by this guy from the start. He's very tall, very thin, he's calm, he's good with his feet and he never seems to drop the ball. A very solid goalkeeper.

If Ajax can develop him in the right way, he could be the next Van der Sar, with whom he has so much in common if you look at his style. Very confident that he'll do well in the tourney.
