SAL Depot Sign

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I have just become the proud owner of a SAL sign (28 inches in diameter). The sign is in par-excellent condition, no rust spots, dents, etc. The sign was removed from a depot by an x-SAL employee and keep by him over the years. It dates back to the late '40's to eary '50's and was mounted on a depot in eastern (NC). Have been unable to pindown the exact location. My question is why did the depot, bridges, etc. other an engines signs appear in red and white only. Most mounted on engines had a black back ground along with the red and white.
