Cat with 28 toes could set Guinness record

Canadian Press Aug. 16, 2002 11:00:00

PRINCE GEORGE, Canada - A manx cat that narrowly escaped death by euthanasia now has a chance at getting in the Guinness Book of Records. Bobbi has 28 toes, said owner Kathy Williams.

"The record to date is a cat with 27 toes," said Williams, who lives at Stone Creek just south of Prince George.

She took Bobbi to the Prince George Veterinary Clinic where a staff member counted 28 toes, but it must be authenticated by a veterinarian statement to go along with the application to the Guinness Book of Records.

She met Bobbi three years ago when she was volunteering for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Prince George and learned the cat was to be put down because of a heart condition.

"I pled his case and ended up adopting him," said Williams, who has since learned the condition minor.

The next step toward fame for Bobbi is for Williams to gather the correct information through photos, clippings and medical documentation.

She said the Guinness people are showing a lot of interest, as are the people who know him.

"He loves people, but he's getting tired of having his toes counted," Williams said. "It's not easy to do because you lose count easily with him moving around."

I would, but don;t like publicity... do they pay you, or just give you prestige? if is get the publicity, I'll make sure to say about the neighbor that uses kitties as target practice! I wonder if they come to the house, or just want pictures? I sure wouldn;t want to fly anywhere!!!

I have Spookie , Harley, Tammy, and DDma, with the most toes, and then 3 othjers just have extra toes. Hmmm maybe I'd get it for having the most in one house with toes???

Go for most toes.

You get the vet to verify it and then send the verification and a picture? I'll bet the info is at their site. No, you have to go anywhere, and I doubt anyone will come to your house since you live far from Publishing Land. If you were within two hours, someone might drive out but probably not.

No, there is no money involved, but some cat magazine might want to do an article.

Even better, if you decide to do this and have a vet certification in hand, you could write an article to submit to a cat mag and then you would get paid for it--if it's published. Might be able to help you edit if it's done when I'm not in the middle of a crisis.

By the way--a number of years ago I figured out that many good things have happened to Sweetie and me in August, for some reason. (I say this cos I know you're interested in this sort of phenomenon, SAR.) Anyway, some weeks ago, before we knew his new firm would take him on, I reminded Sweetie of the August Effect. Looks as if it's holding up. I guess I need to do another update on his progress.

August is a trip down memory lane for us in the south. They are doing a ten year look back about Andrew, culminating in a special news show on August 24.

It so haappens that August 24 is our anniversary, too. We met after Andrew, you see.

ten years! hard to believe that neither of us has killed the other yet. LOL

Details, Barefoot! Did you meet in a shelter or in line at Lowes?

Well, actually, it was after Andrew. some days after andrew one of my neighbors came running outside [we had no electric yet in our neighborhood] yelling "my phone works! my phone works!" then, he realized he should go in and answer it. so, I went and checked mine since he and i were the only ones who still had wires going to the pole. Mine had a lot of static on it, so I went to the outside box on the house and plugged in there. Clear as a bell, as they say.

I started calling everyone I knew. LOL

SO was one of them. We went out to dinner, and I heard all about the apartment roof and the leaks, etc. SO moved in shortly after since I had a roof that worked. SO's apartment building was later razed and rebuilt.

Funny how it goes, huh?

Currently we are having the world's worst time trying to get a dealer to sell us a car. Can you imagine? We have financing all lined up, too.

Today I smelled electric burning. You know, that smell that wires have when they melt? After last October we are well aquainted with that smell. Then, I realized the air was getting warmer in here. I called an A/C company, and the guy came out in less than an hour! He said the heater was running simultaneously with the a/c. I had him disconnect the heater and it's getting cooler now. We know we need to replace the a/c, but didn't know that it was doing this since last October. our electric bill should drop considerably next month!

A new a/c unit [airhandler] costs just under 2 grand. We want to shop around some [well, SO does. I wanted the guy to do it tomorrow!]

meanwhile, tomorrow I am going to a car dealer and force them to sell me a car! LOL No one I know has had this problem when buying a car.

We were debating having an anniversary type party on Saturday so we could maybe rake in on some gifts, but most of the people we know are stingier than we are. LOL

Besides, we haven't had a wedding yet...LOL

I love heat pumps. If we were staying here, I'd replace this nine- year old gas heat/electric AC system with a heat pump. The Hungarian had one put in and her elec bills are WAY lower than mine, even up here in NC where we have some cold winter days, The heat pump I had in Norfolk was a hell of an efficient system too.

Oh. For some reason, I thought you got married, Barefoot. I once pictured your wedding as having lots of odd foods and plenty of green beer.

OG, you probably have better luck with heat pumps down there. Up here, having one running during the winter is like someone left the back door open for awhile -- blasts of cold air. Yucko! Gas is the warmest and most economical in Central Ohio. We don't have a ton of sub-zero days, but we do average a lot of teens and twenties during a normal winter.

Right, heat pumps are no good that far above the sunbelt--unless you go with a geothermal heat pump. It's more expensive re installation but I believe you can recover the cost in a relatively short period of time.
