"Visiting critters?"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

I know I live in the country, 'cause I'm always having "visiters". I'm starting to feel pretty hemmed in because of wild growth in this area, but I guess it's still pretty rural. My daughter told me this morning that she heard the dogs fussin' in the middle of the night, and there was a pig outside. We don't raise pigs. It's not here this morning.....? Maybe the Winfries...but that really is a ways off!

Had a llama visit once, still here. Dolly. Of course. ;-)

Ever have that happen? Around here we say, "It's how you meet your neighbors".

Wow, too bad that pig didn't stay around and no one claimed him after a few weeks-BBQ!!! Right after we moved here I saw some 'blue'heads' peeking out of the woods, we have a lot of wild turkeys so that's what I thought it was. Well once they came totally out of the woods it was 4 peacocks!! They stayed around all day and roosted up in the trees, they left a day or two later and I found out they roamed from the next ridge over-they had to cross our wide creek to get to my place. I still hear them on the quiet mornings doing that 'help help' call. They sure were pretty but wild little things. Patty, when you say hemmed in do you mean the area has a lot of trees/green growth or is it people/housing growth? Just wondered.

Kathy, yup people...that's what I meant. :-) Tooooo many people moving into the area. When I first moved here, that was 17 or so years ago, there was 3 old farmhouses on my road, mine being the oldest place. Now...lets see...there are 12? And I know of at least 2 more coming. It's a pretty short road, as well. Like a mile+, and a dead end. Bummer, huh? At least I back up to a guy who owns hundreds of acres, and he's not selling or going anywhere! And I have a reeeeeeeally long private drive. So it isn't as bad as it may seem. Shoot, we even have a taco bell, now. Bah. Bah, I say. It's those dreaded yuppies, they are arriving in swarms, like locusts! Hehheh, it's a plague I tell you! The highschool is even getting a football team, this will be the first year....yippee..(she says with no enthusiasm). ;-)

Yeah, no pork chops. :-( She said she tried to catch it, "But is was quick!" Peacocks! That's funny! I used to think I wanted some, but I hear they really screech. I had to put up signs once when one of my emus escaped, I drew a picture..sorta like a wanted poster, pretty funny. I never think much if I wake up to a herd of cattle in my yard, or angora goats...my other neighbor raises those by the hundreds. This actually isn't the first time I've had stray pigs! The others, there were 7, were pot bellied ones, though.

Seems like there's no where left where it's not building up. We were looking into S. Dakota but I guess we've given up on there. We checked into the zoning/livestock regs(we're learning) and can you believe it they have restrictions on the type & number of livestock out in the most remote areas.:( They also allow land to be sold landlocked so it was too big of a move to make only to find we made another mistake. Come down near me-I might be more willing to stay if there were some more homesteader types. That might be dangerous though- I can just imagine what I would end up raising if I had someone to go to the sales & auctions with me. LOL

Except for the three original places that were here, the restrictions are in place on my road. 'They' can't keep a single chicken.

That little piggy came back last night, I still haven't seen it, I told DD to wake me up next time.......although...why, really? We _are_ pondering a capture at this time.....I say bait is the key.
