Winter lettuce

Read this in BWH,and thought I would try it with lettuce and spinach.

A fellow took concrete blocks laid them side by side in a rectangle, put an old glass storm door on top, and then planted lettuce in the makeshift greenhouse. They ate fresh lettuce all winter from Sept through March, through snow, ice storms, temps in the teens, and even below zero at times.
