U.S. Refused To Fund Hatfill's Work

LSU Fired Embattled Bioweapons Scientist On Tuesday

WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department reportedly didn't want to fund any work done by Steven Hatfill, the biowarfare scientist the FBI has called a "person of interest" in the anthrax investigation.

A law enforcement official said Justice officials sent Hatfill's former employer, Louisiana State University, a request asking that Hatfill not be used on any projects funded by grants from the agency.

Hatfill was a researcher for LSU until the university fired him Tuesday. He was placed on administrative leave a day after the request from the Justice Department.

LSU's National Center for Biomedical Research and Training receives most of its funding from the Justice Department.

The university announced Hatfill's termination by saying school officials were making no judgment as to Hatfill's guilt or innocence in the FBI investigation. Last fall's anthrax attacks killed five people.

Hatfill has vehemently maintained his innocence and has filed complaints against the FBI and Attorney General John Ashcroft, who have not labeled Hatfill a suspect in the anthrax probe. Hatfill said last week that his life "has been completely and utterly destroyed" by Ashcroft and the FBI.
