Libertarian Party May Withdraw Support Posted: 8:21 p.m. EDT September 12, 2002 Updated: 11:47 p.m. EDT September 12, 2002

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- California's Libertarian Party is considering withdrawing support for its candidate for governor because he spit on a radio talk show host.

Gary Copeland admitted to The Orange County Register that he spit on KABC radio host Mark Whitman after Whitman switched off Copeland's microphone during an interview Sunday.

The host turned off the mike when Copeland was recounting past abuses of immigrants and suggested that Whitman supported such treatment. Copeland got up to leave, heard several on-air comments from Whitman, then turned and spit on him.

Party chairman Aaron Starr says party officials were "mortified" when they heard of the incident.

The executive committee is scheduled to meet Saturday to vote on whether to rescind support for Copeland.
