Can God Be Handcuffed?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

I'm reading a book by Howard Caver titled Unhandcuffing God; Releasing God to Work Miracles in Your Life. Mr. Caver makes the assertion that we must take the handcuffs of God so that He can work miracles in your life. The bood is published by The Colbert House in Norman Oklahoma, $10.99; ISBN 1-887399-07-0 What are your thoughts. Be Blessed Pastor Paris

I personally do not think we have that much power to handcuff God. If anything we put handcuffs on ourselves, which prevents us from receiving from God.

Lack of faith is one of the handcuffs. Wavering in the things we ask for is another. And I am sure there are more.

Dear Rev. Paris,

It would be so nice if you would tell us more about this book. I am intrigued by the title.

Good to hear from you again, Rev Paris, Who does man think he is that he can handcuff God? To my mind, it is a matter of man removing the scales from his eyes. It reminds me of an organizational Development book I read years ago on "empowering change in your organization". (James A Belasco)He talks about how trainers put heavy chains on young elephants attached to a stake. They learn to stay in place, even though as older elephants they could pull stakes out and roam. The world has us "tethered" in much the same way, we are conditioned, scales on eyes, to stay in place. God has given us the power to mve on but we tend to stay in place. God is not handcuffed, we are.\God Bless

Dear Pastor

Bless the Lord and I hope you have enjoyed the book. I have two distinct privledges as regards this book.

First, I know Pastor Caver personally and have had the experience of seeing the miracles God continually works in his life. Pastoring a church of much less than 100 members with more employees than attenders in a month, he has transformed his community, provided for the elderly, and led this area in ministerial integrity. He is somebody in God!

Secondly, I had the opportunity to write the forward for the book. Wow, my first! But because I have watched his walk with the master, I could not have been more blessed.

World Missionary Baptist Church is located in Fort Worth Texas and the book can be acquired from the church @ 1200 E. Bessie 817-332-1202

The primise of the book is that God wants to work miracles in the lives of believers, but many times we handcuff him from acting through unbelief, disobedience, and a failure to give of ourselves. As a man who God uses in such a mighty way, I am a witness to God's release into his life.

Check it out! The book is great and he now has a workbook to go with it for teaching churches, small groups, or sunday schools.

Morning All!

Man can NEVER handcuff God. It is simply not possible. I've not read the book, but is very concerned about position that the author places God in. We must take the handcuffs off our hearts, mind and body so that God can do God's work. God does not limit us, we limit ourselves. The title makes for good a marketing strategy, which could be developed into other revenue producing ventures.

How do you read the following scriptures? I consider that Jesus was "handcuffed" by their unbelief.

Mark 6:4 Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” 5 And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any mighty miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Pastor Paris,

I now have the understanding about what the book is about. It is the wording, but I think we now understand the point the author makes.

The scripture you have given is interesting.

My mother use to say at times she would like to do this or that, but her hands were tide. In other words it was beyond her power, to do that which was asked.(At least this is what I thought) I understand the usuage of handcuffing, and from the brief description of the contents of the book that was given, I am sure it is a good book. I think the title is eyecatching.

Getting to what I think of the scripture you used. Jesus hands were tied, not by the hands of the people; but rather by God. When I look at this, God would not allow him to do great and mighty works, because there was a lack of faith in the people.

When I was little, there were times when I would ask for something and mama could not for several reasons, give it to me. Many times it was because I was disobedient or just wasn't meeting the conditions, and at times the timing was wrong. I had no power to prevent my mother from giving or doing someting for me; but something bigger than the both of us prevented her from doing so. She couldn't even if she wanted to. The scripture says he could there do no mighty works. (This is just my opinion of that scripture, and in no way does it take away from the content and validity of the book)

Continuing with Pastor Paris' homily on unbelief caused me to think about an often overlooked passages of Scripture found in St. Mark 9:24. It describes the reaction of a father whose child has just been cured of demonic possession by Jesus. The father's response to Jesus' commentary about the importance of belief is simply profound - "Lord I believe, but help thou mine unbelief". A truly timeless confession about the omnipresent problem of unbelief. QED

What we bind on earth is bound in Heaven, and what we loose on earth is loosed in Heaven. Could it be that God isn't handcuffed, we just haven't loosed very much?

Find out what God's will is for a situation, then appropriate the Name of Jesus to loose it.

Can a person actually HANDCUFF GOD? That was a topic of discussion a few weeks ago. I just click onto the web site. Since i wrote the book, Unhandcuffing God, let me speak a word on the subject. Handcuffs are designed to keep someone with some power, from using that power. According to scripture, people keep God from doing what He desires to do. God wants everyone saved, but if a person does not accept His son, Jesus, He can't(refuses) save them!!!! Yeah! He is all powerful and can do anything, but he set up rules to ALLOW us to twart His plans in many ways. The title of the book was gleaned from Mark 6, where it states that Jesus could do NO (couldn't do) mighthy works because of THEIR UNBELIEF. His home boys handcuffed him. Jesus went other places and did mighty works. My book look at the many miracles God has released in my life and in the life of the World Missionary Baptist Church congregation. When reviewing these miracles i discovered GODLY principles that were the foundation of these miracles. The book, Unhandcuffing God, can be purchased through our web site at www.worldmbc.com Hope all read it BEFORE stumbling over the two words, "Unhandcuffing God." I pray that some won't get hung up on words IN HIS SERVICE, howard caver

God wants everyone saved, but if a person does not accept His son, Jesus, God can't(refuses) save them!!!! Yeah! He is all powerful and can do anything, but he set up rules to ALLOW us with our free will to twart His plans in many ways. The title of the book was gleaned from Mark 6, where it states that Jesus could do NO (couldn't do) mighthy works THERE because of THEIR UNBELIEF. His home boys handcuffed him. Jesus went other places and did mighty works. My book looks at the many miracles God has released in my life and in the life of the World Missionary Baptist Church congregation. Not following some biblical principles keeps God from blessing us. I pray that some won't get hung up on those two words. Most Christians who have read the book have been strengthened. A pastor's marriage has been saved. A church building has been built. A business has been started. A 15 year old ministry has been saved from closing. These readers of the book found that they HAD BEEN handcuffing God. Then they released God to bless them as God had planned aforetime. IN HIS SERVICE, howard caver
