New Issue of Mother Earth News

Does anyone else subscribe to MEN? I got the newest copy today and it's got some really good articles. There's the complete instructions for building an Outdoor Oven. I'm going to put up the base foundation this weekend since I have everything I need for that part and pick up the sand & bricks on Mon or Tues. Then it's just digging the clay for the oven form and with all the rain we've had that should be messy fun. I've always wanted one of those wood fired ovens but didn't know how to build it, now I have no excuse. There's also a section on sourdough bread and chainsaw sharpening.

its been about 4 years since I even looking at MEN. And it too commercial then,, compared to the old issues I buoght on ebay. But I think your talking about the same isse I bought years ago. It has articles on the oven, and sourdough, and even the chain sharpening. Do you think they are reuseing the same articles this close together?

That is one thing that i plan to build one of these days, found this site that has tons of info, pictures and building plans, only problem is so many choices, http://mha-net.org/msb/html/bakeoven.htm

Also would like to have a masonary heat/bake/pizza stove, maybe with the next addition to my place.

Maybe they think that it's a whole new group of readers that won't remember the same articles had been printed before. I quit getting MEN for about 5 yrs then I got a gift subscription and have been getting it ever since. Most months there's maybe one or two articles I really like but for some reason this months issue seemed really good. Maybe they are realizing folks don't care for the upscale version they've been publishing and they are going back to their roots. I get Countryside, Backwoods Home, BackHome, MEN & Primative Living but Countryside is still my favorite. I have noticed that it's not quite as good as it was years ago, I think with all the editor changes it changed the 'flavor' a bit.

I got mine in the mail - - and I have been too busy to read it -

I read Backwoods Home when I'm anywhere that sells it, and I bought a BIG box full of old issues that have been keeping me busy - - I, too, like the old issues of all these.

I really miss JD's imput in Countryside. His philosphy was similar to that of the editors at Backwoods Home, and I always read every word of his Beyond the sidewalks pieces.

The editors at BWH did a splendid piece called the "Coming American Dictatorship" ( I think it was done in seven parts), which really, really, gets you to thinking. I encourage anyone who has not read the series to try and do so - - whether they agree with the piece or not - - it gives one lots on which to ponder.
