Pope St. Victor I reigned from 189-199, and was himself an African. I'm not sure if that answers your question, but thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn something new!

Hello, Alex.

The first pope in "modern times" to visit Africa was Pope Paul VI. He went to Uganda in 1969. Pope Paul was the first pope to be a world traveller [he went to Asia too] -- and the first one to leave Italy in 150 years.

God bless you.
John
