Remains Of WWII Airmen Found In Himalayas Crew Crashed In 1944

BEIJING -- The remains of four American airmen from World War II are on their way home from eastern Tibet, after almost 60 years on a Himalayan mountainside.

A joint U.S.-Chinese search team has retrieved the remains from the wreckage of a downed cargo plane. A U.S. Army captain calls the retrieval mission a "complete success."

The military said all four airmen were killed immediately when they crashed into a meadow more than 15,000 feet high on the mountain. The crash happened back in 1944. The transport plane was flying a supply run from India to ferry goods to U.S. troops in China.

It's one of more than 500 American planes believed to have crashed in the Himalayas during World War II.
