whereabouts of steam engine at lowery park zoo, tampa

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

hey, what happened to the steam engine that was at lowery park zoo for years??? I went there recently (had not been there since the mid 80's) and besides the place being totally different, i could find no trace of that big steam locomotive, what happened to it and what was its ancestry? I have some pics of it from way back, but cannot seem to locate them at the moment, im sure it was ex-sal or acl. Hope it went somewhere that appreciates it

Troy, that engine got moved up to the Pasco County Fairgrounds right on US 301, it's been painted yellow and is easily seen from the highway. There's a photo of it on pg. 75 of Hampton Dunn's "Yesterday's Tampa", but there's no lettering on the tender. The headlamp has 1147 visible. I read somewhere that some lumber company owned this engine. Sadly it's just rusting away out there. I remembered it well from Lowry Park, my dad took some pics of me sitting in the cab when I was about six or seven...what a treat for a kid!
