Steve contact me re: piglets

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

I left a message on the humanehomesteader board but thought I should also post here. Let me know how much they are and what breed if you know. I'm still not sure if I want to take on another critter project but will make a decision this week. Thanks for keeping me in mind.

Kathy , I didn't see your post here because I have the " Recent Answers " of Countryside Family in my favorites. So when I click to this forum I get to view the Questains that were all ready answered.

The breed of the piglets are a wild / Duroc cross. The sow who gave birth , her mother was Duroc and her father a pure wild.I don't know if the wild is a razor back or Russian or if Razor back and Russian are the same breed.

The male piglet came out with black , white and gold spots ? So I don't know if there are other breeds mixed in . I was told , the cross makes a leaner , tastier pork.

If I was able to post a picture of them on this forum. I'm sure you wouldn't be able to resist taking them.Even I've thought of keeping raising and selling feeder pigs after seeing the baby pigs. And the fact of the litter being 4 females and 1 male , makes it seem like the opportunity to raise feeder pigs just fell into my lap.

Baby pigs sell better than adult hogs or sows. And I'm tempted, but I'm doing too many things and I wouldn't have the money to feed them until they could give birth.

The Crossville flea market is open all year ,I've only been there on saturdays , but I think they are only open saturdays and sundays?? They have some interesting stuff there ,besides livestock. If you just wanted to sell your extra poultry , but didn't want to stay all day at the flea market , there's a guy there from Friendsville Tnn. , who buys poultry whole sale and sells there retail. If your interested in selling your poultry whole sale to this guy I'll e-mail you details.

You'd make more if you sat around and sold your poultry yourself. And Crossville does bring a higher dollar for poultry and livestock than my area .

Thanks Steve, I am going to check out Crossville on the weekend of the 21st(?). My girlfriend & I are going to Nashville so we're taking the scenic route through Crossville.:) If you have pics you can post them on the humanehomesteader site. I don't know how here but it's easy on the yahoo sites. I would stay and sell my own animals if I do decide to sell down there. I never have more than I can raise so if they don't sell they would just come home for another week, plus there is a flea mkt in Leitchfield,Ky on Weds so I could always try that if they don't sell at Crossville. I don't normally sell at wholesale since it's been my experience that I end up losing money when I do it that way. By the way, how big do you think the piglets will be by the time I can pick them up-just a guess is fine? I'm trying to figure out how many I can get so that they would fit in my car.:) What do you feed your pigs? I like to try and keep them on what they've had and if I choose to change it in the future, then I would do it gradually.

Kathy , I 'd guess one would be the size where it can still fit in a cat sized carrier kennel ? I'm feeding the sow real well so the babies have a good start , I always like the baby animals to be on the chubby side .They will be 5 weeks old the 28th of OCT .And 6 weeks old the 4th of November. I think I bought mine when they were 5 weeks old. But I can tell the guy I bought mine from wasn't really sure. I feed the sow Hog Grower from Tractor Suppy stores. I feed her this because of her babies , I want to make sure she is getting all the vitamins and minerals she and the babies need . She also is eating scratch feed ( corn , oats , wheat ,millo ) calf - manna , goat milk and left overs .She also eats grass.

Today I let her ( sow ) out and she took her babies into the hills and was gone for 2 hours. I guess she also eats what ever the pigs in the wild eat.I figure that why she goes into the woods for so long , to find foods that I don't feed her.
