Not that this helps with the question of "how" but, it is interesting to note that Alexanders grave was known about to the Romans, as they seemed to visit it, or at least the Caesars did, according to Suetonius's "The twelve Caesars".-Joe

Alexander had a burial like no other actually. As the legends go, under Alexandria in Egypt, he was buried in a huge tomb that to this day has yet to be found. The tomb was supposedly the size of the city. For a man of Alexander's stature, I would expect no less.
