moving overseas

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Repossession : One Thread

I am moving to New Zealand. I was repossessed by Abbey National 8yrs ago. I have always just returned any mail unopened and haven't heard anything for about 2 - 3 years. Will they persue me there? Do you think they have given up?

Hi there,

Lenders do not give up often and using the Limitation rulings which apply may decide to pursue you at a later date.

However, as you are leaving the UK it will be extremely difficult to trace you let alone chase a debt (unless the lender is reading this web page!).

To pursue you half way around the world is not very cost effective and as this is always the first consideration a lender takes I suggest you enjoy your new life.

Regards,

Paul

Unless they know you've gone to New Zealand and its worth it to them to find you, then they're unlikely to bother. But if you are going to keep any bank accounts/savings etc over here, then give an address in the UK for statements/correspondence etc and don't tell them you're going abroad. The last thing you want is to innocently give out your NZ address and find it on your credit record and then being chased by Abbey!
