The Web Accessibility Guidelines and associated documents published by the World Wide Consortium are a fantastic resource, and are recognised as the 'standard' reference documents for those building accessible websites. However they can be difficult for the beginner to understand, so this short article attempts to provide both 'a way of thinking about the guidelines' and a more gentle route towards understanding them: W3C Accessibility Guidelines: an approach by Jim Byrne and Pat Byrne.
