Amid Sniper Search, Another Man Shot Dead in Virginia Fri Oct 11,11:26 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police said a man was shot at a gasoline station near Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Friday, and media reports said he later died of his wounds in a local hospital.

The shooting touched off a renewed hunt for a white van, as investigators searched for a sniper who has killed seven people and wounded two others in a week-long murder spree.

However, police said they could not confirm a connection between Friday's shooting and the series of sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C., area. Two of the sniper's victims were killed at area gasoline stations.

The Friday shooting occurred near a state-police barracks just off a busy highway in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

"We're on the lookout for a white Chevrolet Astro van last seen going northbound on Route 1," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

Exits along highway I-95, the major interstate on the U.S. East Coast, were closed in the Virginia area.

If I were trying to make a fast getaway, it wouldn't be on a limited access highway. I think the shooter was on the sidelines somewhere.

Yes, I agree. This person isn't stupid. Also, he knows the police are looking for a white van and I can't believe he would still be using that vehicle, if indeed he ever was. It's not that difficult to rent a car or U-haul or something. Or borrow a car from a friend. On the other hand, he could be one of those types who believe he's so much smarter than the police and will use the van anyway because he believes he's too clever to be caught.

If there are accomplices ...

stationed nearby, ready to be obviously leaving the scene in a white van, but armed, can always claim to be scared ...

sorry ... the white van is unarmed, draws attention away from the right direction ... so, we've established I'm not very good at crime. :)
