The San Francisco Police Department says a riot at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School that caused police to evacuate students from the Bayview District campus was brought under control at about noon today.

Students have been detained and taken to youth guidance centers, according to police. The number of students detained was not available.

Officers from three area police stations and a SWAT team were called to the school at 45 Conkling St. at around 10:50 a.m. today on school on reports of a fight involving up to 75 students. Police say the fight may have started over recent transfers from others school.

No one involved in the melee needed to be taken to the hospital, although some suffered minor injuries, police say.

Police say the school has been evacuated and the only students still there this afternoon are ones waiting for their parents or guardians to come pick them up.

"What we are trying to do is to get a parent to accompany students from the school for the students safety and to avoid confrontations outside the school,'' police spokesman Dewayne Tully said.
