air circulation for plant shelf

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

Thanks to an truck-driving ex-nephew I have a dozen or more orchids and other plants to keep thru the winter. I have a 6 ft shelf unit that has 36 x 16 in shelves. I have plant lights 36 in long. Because I work away from home 3 days a week and don't keep the house heated, I wanted to use the shelves and lights for the plants. I'm placing it in front of a south facing glass sliding door, but the yard , even in winter , is very shaded. I thought I might enclose the unit with plastic, attach the lights under the shelves and maybe run some heat tape in a bed of gravel for each shelf. My concern is will the humidity be too high without some sort of mechanical air circulation? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks.

You would need air circulation to keep everything in check, maybe a small fan on low would do the trick for you. Some people keep a cold greenhouse anyway,40 to 45 deg.
