Roll Call

Gary's Kids. The children of soon-to-be former Rep. Gary Condit (D)have gone nuclear on the man who beat their dad in the primary, sending out an unusual mailing that urges voters in California's 18th district to spurn Democratic candidate Dennis Cardoza.

The nasty attack, paid for by Chad and Cadee Condit, suggests that the Condit family should serve as a moral arbiter in the race. It calls Cardoza, who is in a tight race with Republican Dick Monteith, a "shameful" opportunist "who is attempting to go from a strip bar owner to the House of Representatives."

They take issue with the fact that Cardoza, who once worked for the Congressman but later turned on him, proclaimed that he wanted to heal the district from the Chandra Levy scandal.

"This is from a man that had numerous allegations of sexual harassment during his tenure as the owner of that strip club," writes the duo, who have previously chastised the media for running with scurrilous allegations. "This is from a man that fired a woman for breast-feeding during her lunch break. This is from a man that according to sources filed [for] bankruptcy and has been accused of laundering campaign money."

A Cardoza aide told the Modesto Bee, which first reported the mailing, that the letter is "riddled with false accusations."

"It's disappointing and sad that Chad and Cadee have had to stoop to this level,"the staffer told the newspaper. "They're stuck in March, when the rest of the world is living in October. It's time to move on."

The letter all but endorses Monteith, but the Republican's camp insists that it had nothing to do with the mailing. Nevertheless, the letter - addressed to "Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Democrats" - makes it clear that the Condits do not want their supporters to vote for Cardoza.

Ironically enough, the mean-spirited letter starts off by saying the Condit family has been treated very badly. "Over the past sixteen months we have seen our parents suffer a great injustice, a meanness that we were not familiar with,"says the letter. "From political opportunists, to false headlines, to an all-out attack on our mother and father."

The letter concludes by claiming that Cardoza has tried to hurt military veterans: "P.S.-BOTH OUR GRANDFATHERS SERVED IN THE US NAVY. DON'T DISHONOR THEIR SERVICE AND THE SERVICE OF THOUSANDS OF OTHER VETERANS. VOTE AGAINST DENNIS CARDOZA."

Tough stuff, but HOH has a hunch that Cardoza might not mind the Condits reminding voters that he's the one who took out the Congressman.
