hanging valleys

I understand basically how hanging valleys are formed. When there is a glacier on a mountain top the sides would heat up and it would partially melt and the water would run off and erode the sides of the mountain. what I dont understand is that why wouldnt the glacier fall off when the water would run under it. With the steep slope shouldnt it just slide off the mountain?
