Mary Ellen Pleasant

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I would like a brief synopsis of Mary Ellen (Mammy) Pleasant. I need information of her birth (approximate date) and death (approximate date) and what did she die of (if available). Is there an obit on her and any offspring or surviving family/siblings.

Here's a pretty extensive site. She lived from 1814-1903. Her house, which burned down in the 1920s, was at Bush and Octavia Streets, a site that is now Presbyterian Medical Center. Most histories portray her as a blackmailer and pseudo-voodoo practitioner and let her reputation go at that, but this site gives a much broader significance to her: "Mother of Civil Rights" http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/BHM/mepleasant.html

i have recently devleoped a way of telling if someone is funny by three sentences they have written. so, what im wondering is, am i funny? by the way, my name doesnt count.cos this really is my name. dont worry, im not thinking about a lawsuit. im thinking about cheese. yes, so id really preciate it if one or many people came up with some sort of funny test. i anticipate questions to which humourus or unhumourus aswers must be given. and u lot remind me of rhebus monkeys.

There are several books written about Mammy Pleasant. Also the San Francisco Ghost Hunt Tour goes to the area where she lived and tells quit a bit about her. Sensationalized, but still pretty entertaining. I have one of the books, but it is packed as we are in the process of a move, but when I unpack I will email the author's name to you.
