BQ23-7's....Gone??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I just recently found out about this sight, and noticed a thread put in about BQ23-7's back in May of '99, and a comment or two about the possibility of preserving one. Any updates on this, or have they all faced the scrapper's torch? I'm a pretty big fan of these type of locomotives, but could never find anyone to contact about their status. I remember as a boy in the mid to late '80s watching these "Q's" go by my parents house (never in the lead of course) on the old SAL Americus - Savannah line. Even though I was pretty young and didn't know better, I still kick myself in the rear for at least not borrowing my mother's camera and getting a picture of these locomotives!!!! Jared Blocker

Riley,

I work for Norfolk Southern, so I know about the "nice gestures" of corporations. I'm just disappointed and saddened that all of these "Q's" are gone, and it's my fault that I didn't make more of an effort to find out and participate in trying to save one of them. I don't expect big railroads to save every model of locomotive that they have/had. Like you said, they're out there to make money.......that's why I said "who am I kidding?" at the end of my last message.

As I recall efforts were made privately to raise the money to save one. If people don't show the interest and money isn't raised CSX (or any other company formed to make money) shouldn't be expected to save one of each model because we think it's a nice gesture.

The Central of Georgia, for example, saved a 4-8-4 locomotive for many years at Columbus, GA trying to get that city simply to find a place for exhibition. The city didn't care and it was scrapped.
