Outhouse update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

As you know, I've been building this "outhouse" to use as a shed. It is coming out great (considering I had to dig up the footings twice to get it square)and now I am at a cridical point. What color to paint it.

My son wants it to be brown because he believes all old outhouses were. I want to paint it a blue/grey to match out house. My husband thinks every outbuilding on the property should be barn red.

I know I'll win but I just wanted some other opionions. It is about 50 ft from the house, between the swimming pool and pond.

I'll post a picture once it's done. It even has a moon on the door.

Outhouses don't have paint! They're just old weathered grey wood! :-P

It's T-111, needs paint or stain.

My own choice is for painting it a weathered grey colour. As Joy stated, they're all sort of silver-grey, and by painting/staining it that colour to begin with, as the coverage begins to fade out, you won't notice the weathering. I used that logic when constructing my horse fence, and stained my house the same shade of grey that spider webs look, so you wouldn't see them when they start to festoon the place (not being compulsive about web removal that is).

My dad made one that looked like a rocket ship and was bright yellow - - so I guess you can please yourself as for what you want to make it look like! I've even seen two-story outhouses.

I agree with the weathered grey look! We put up our garage and my barn with T-111 and just let them "age". We wanted them to sort of blend in with the natural background of trees. Also, our log home is weathered grey now...so any other shade on the outbuildings would look out of place :-)!!

So...go with the weathered look, Dee! That way, too, if you ever did want to use it as a REAL outhouse it wouldn't be so noticable :-)!

I'm not a big fan of the weathered natural look, so I'll vote for the blue/grey or the red.

Since you built it Dee, you get to choose the color by all rights ;- )!!!

I agree with you though, paint it to match the house!

Well, really, it's grey with a blue tinge more then blue with a grey tinge so it will look a bit weathered. No, really...
