Florida County Finds 100,000 Lost Votes 53 Percent Of All State Voters Went To Polls Tuesday Posted: 7:22 a.m. EST November 7, 2002 Updated: 11:10 a.m. EST November 7, 2002 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Election officials in Broward County misplaced more than 100,000 ballots cast on Tuesday, but the amended totals did not change the result of any races.

The county elections office on Wednesday discovered 103,222 votes that had not been counted Tuesday night, although officials had said 100 percent of the precincts were included in that night's results.

"It's another screw-up, and I'm not satisfied this is correct,'' Broward Republican leader George Lemieux said.

The missing ballots helped explain why Broward's original numbers showed that just 34.5 percent of the county's registered voters went to the polls. Wednesday's revised numbers said that 441,198 Broward residents actually voted, or 45.1 percent.

"The initial reports didn't include everything we tabulated,'' Broward deputy elections supervisor Joe Cotter said. "It was a minor software thing. Once we realized it, we took the proper steps to fix it.''

Statewide, 53 percent of all voters went to the polls Tuesday.

Even with the new numbers, Broward had the fourth-lowest turnout, in terms of percentage, of any Florida county, and its worst turnout in a gubernatorial election since at least 1970.

Results are scheduled to be certified Thursday.
