A photographer has won a payout after one of his pictures was altered to apparently show Bill Clinton shaking hands with an alien.

Freelance Douglas M Bruce took the picture of the former president and a secret service agent during the 1992 US presidential campaign.

However, The Boston Globe reports the picture was altered by The Weekly World News to make it appear Mr Clinton was actually meeting an alien.

It isn't the only time the Weekly World News has published pictures which claim to show US politicians meeting aliens.

During the 2000 US presidential campaign, George W Bush showed off an article in the magazine which said he was being endorsed by an alien.

The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit has ordered the Florida tabloid to pay Bruce $25,000 (£15,807) for splashing the picture on its front page, on T-shirts, and in advertisements throughout the Clinton presidency.

The paper says Bruce wanted $400,000 in royalties for a shot that virtually became a Weekly World News mascot for eight years, even after Bruce's lawyer sent the newspaper a letter telling it to stop.

But the court ruled ''the bizarre nature'' of the doctored photograph helped ''turn it into a sort of icon,'' not the ''routine'' picture taken by Bruce.

''He would have photographed the alien if he could have,'' Bruce's lawyer, Andrew D Epstein told the paper.
