More from Fox.

"Somewhere in the area of Ashland, KY." Ohio state troopers think they saw the other guy in a stolen BMW w/WV tags (which they believe is not Alice's car), threw stop sticks but car kept on driving, they lost him.

Thanks, BF!

If Kona or Chrystal sees the message, one of them can call her. Chrystal lives close to SAR. she's the one who helped with the kitty playpen for SAR so her asshole neighbor wouldn't shoot her cats anymore.

Not sure if anyone else has her number.

CNN:

Sun night, Basham attempted carjacking in Ashland, then turned himself in. (Fox mentioned was chased by police, crossed river, probably was freezing his arse off). Repeated info about car chase re Ohio state troopers.

Quoting LEOs as saying concerned because violence level has been ratcheting up.

At least he should be able to say whether Alice is still alive.

Actually, the trail might be a little cold...

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,70827,00.html Kentucky Police Nab One Escapee Linked to Abductions Tuesday, November 19, 2002 ASHLAND, Ky. — Police have arrested one of two Kentucky jail escapees who are suspects in the kidnapping of a South Carolina woman, authorities said Tuesday.

Branden L. Basham, 21, of Hopkins County, Ky., was taken into custody Sunday night after police say he tried to carjack two women in the parking lot of an Ashland mall.

Basham initially told police his name was Josh Leon Ritman, Capt. Robert Ratliff said Tuesday. On Monday night, fingerprints confirmed he was Basham.

"What little information he gave us just didn't add up on his personal history," Ratliff said.

On Sunday, a man eluded an officer after reports of an attempted carjacking and ran toward the Ohio River, Ratliff said. Police contained the area and during the night Basham ended up in the river. He surrendered after about an hour and was treated for hypothermia at a local hospital, Ratliff said.

Basham is being held at the Boyd County Detention Center without bond. He faces charges of attempted robbery, criminal attempt to commit murder on an officer and fleeing or eluding a police officer.

Authorities in South Carolina say Alice Louise Donovan of Galivants Ferry was abducted Thursday from a Wal-Mart parking lot in Conway. She remains missing. Police believe Basham and Chadrick Fulks are linked to the crime.

Basham and Fulks, also are suspected of abducting James Hawkins, 42, of Hanson, Ky., taking him 40 miles north to Indiana and leaving him bound to a tree, authorities said. Hawkins struggled for hours before freeing himself and summoning help.

Basham and the 25-year-old Fulks escaped Nov. 4 from the Hopkins County jail in western Kentucky. Basham was serving a five-year sentence for writing a bad check and Fulks was awaiting trial on robbery charges, authorities said.

The Ohio Highway Patrol said an armed suspect believed to be Fulks got away from troopers last night after a chase on U.S. 23 in north- Central Ohio.

Authorities said troopers saw a late model BMW with a West Virginia plate at a Marion, Ohio, rest stop around 10:30 last night. They said a check of the license plate showed the car was stolen.

The troopers tried to stop the car with road spikes but it kept going and officers lost sight of it.

Damn, so it WAS sunday night, that wasn't a slip on part of reporter. Okay: "On Monday night, fingerprints confirmed he was Basham." So they didn't know who he was until last night.

-- Anonymous, November 19, 2002

How can they lose a car? I thought those police cruisers were fast. How come they didn't chase it? Is there a 'don't chase policy' in that area? Some areas don't do that because of the risk to the public, I know.

Sure hope the schmuck starts talking soon.

Someone's notes from a Fox Cable update:

Authorities are optimistic this capture in KY will lead to another break...

Then he says authorities almost captured the 2nd suspect, Chadrick Fulks, on highway 23 in North Central Ohio last night - they threw road spikes ,,, it was stolen car with the suspect inside but they lost sight of him!!!

(He did not say if they saw anyone else in the vehicle with the suspect)

--Review of man tied to tree --Review of events in Conway leading up to Alice's abduction --Review of capture of 1 of 2 suspects

The question was asked: Alice's BMW ... was that the car seen in Ohio last night?

Answer: They believe it was different ... this one in Ohio was late model BMW --- had West Virginia tags

The MO of 2 suspects was to constantly change cars ... that is what has made case so difficult to break...

-- Anonymous, November 19, 2002

they should be finding out where the latest stolen car was taken from, and search from there for her car. I suspect that is what they are doing now.

gotta wait for the next update, and the waiting is annoying.

if it was california we'd be watching it live.

With Gspun acting up again this morning, BrookS sent these two good reports.

Man jailed after chase, shootout with officer

Suspect nabbed after dip in river

By Kenneth Hart

Of The Daily Independent

ASHLAND - A man was arrested on several felony charges following a bizarre drama Sunday night that included a carjacking attempt, an exchange of gunfire with a police officer and an apparent attempt to swim the Ohio River in near-freezing temperatures.

The suspect was identified as Joshua Leon Ritman, 24. He was lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center, charged with the attempted murder of the officer, along with first-degree robbery and fleeing or evading police in the first degree.

Ritman apparently tried to escape a police dragnet by swimming the river. He was treated for hypothermia before being jailed, Ashland Police Department Acting Patrol Capt. Todd Kelley said.

A deputy jailer said this morning that Ritman had no address and was listed as homeless.

Kelley said Ritman had no identification and that police weren't sure whether he had any outstanding warrants because they had been unable to confirm whether the suspect had given them his actual name.

The events began to unfold about 7:20 p.m. in the Ashland Town Center parking lot when Ritman allegedly attempted to break into an occupied vehicle.

The victims of the intended carjacking were a 39-year-old Raceland woman and her 15-year-old daughter, police said.

The woman, who spoke this morning on the condition that her and her daughter's names not be used, said this morning that Ritman approached them as they were getting into their car.

"He started asking for directions. I told him I couldn't help him," she said.

At that point, the woman said she noticed that Ritman had a gun under his coat. He pointed the weapon at her daughter and tried to climb into the car, she said.

The woman said her daughter had been talking on a cell phone, and Ritman apparently thought she had aleady called the police. He fled the scene.

Ritman was obviously nervous and seemed agitated, "like he was on something," the woman said.

The woman said she used her daughter's phone to call 911.

An APD officer, Matt Davis, responded to the call, but Ritman had already fled. Davis pulled out of the mall parking lot and turned onto Mall Road, across Winchester Avenue from Town Center.

There, Davis spotted a man on foot who matched the description of the carjacking suspect, Kelley said.

Davis pulled his cruiser up next to the man and told him to stop, but he kept walking, Kelley said. After being ordered to stop a second time, the suspect took off running.

Davis got out of his cruiser and gave chase, pursuing the suspect across the Fazoli's, Stewart's Hot Dogs and Movies 10 parking lots, Kelley said. As the suspect was running across the OfficeMax lot, he turned and shot at Davis, he said. Davis returned fire.

The suspect and Davis each shot twice, Kelley said. One of the rounds from the suspect's gun struck a Ford Ranger pickup parked in the Movies 10 lot.

The suspect ran across the railroad tracks onto AK Steel property, then over the river bank, Kelley said. At that point, the APD called in reinforcements from the Boyd County Sheriff's Department, Boyd County Police Department and Catlettsburg Police Department. Off-duty APD officers also came to the scene to help search for the suspect.

A tracking dog and handler from the Cabell County Sheriff's Department were also summoned.

Officers set up a perimeter around the area where the suspect was seen going over the river bank, Kelley said.

After about an hour, the suspect emerged and began walking toward the line of officers, he said. The man was soaking wet, and obviously freezing, he said.

Kelley said he could not say for certain whether Ritman had tried to swim the river.

"All I know is that he was wet," he said.

A Kentucky National Guard helicopter was on its way to help look for Ritman when he was apprehended, Assistant Police Chief Rob Ratliff said.

He said there would be separate investigations - criminal and administrative - of the discharge of Davis' duty weapon. Both are standard procedure any time an officer fires his gun, he said.

Kelley said he did not believe Davis would be placed on leave while the investigations are taking place.

Davis fell and suffered a pulled muscle while chasing the suspect, Kelley said. He was released after treatment at KDMC, he said.

Meanwhile, the chase has moved into Ohio... (If he mistakenly heads into northern Michigan, we have him for sure!)

-- Anonymous, November 19, 2002

I'm just getting online.

As Redeye pointed out on TB, the area around Marion, Ohio is rural farm country. Anyone who knows the back roads at all can travel a long ways without being seen, plus there are many abondoned homes, trailers, and state rec areas. If Alice is still alive and with him, he could dump her in that area, and it would be a long time before she was found.

Deb and Mutter have been putting out flyers. I emailed copies of the flyers to several folks up north. I agree with whomever said he might be doubling back toward Columbus -- he could do that a lot of different ways. Would he? Dunno. I would or head for Cleveland . . . Wonder if he has friends in Central Ohio? That might explain why he was up on 23. Anyone else would be out on I-71 or I-75. US 23 is mainly a divided highway that connects rural OH to Columbus and runs most of the way up to Lake Erie.

I haven't heard anything on the scanner about it, yet.

I would think that if Basham is telling the truth about when he last saw her alive that the search should start with that area and extend into Ohio. I don't believe that she is with the other prep at this point.

Although I haven't read anything to support this idea, one thick- headed thing he may have done if she was in the trunk of the BMW was to leave her there when he dumped the car. I notice that the car hasn't turned up, yet.

Well, the word is out around here: this story has been running on the TV and radio news. Perhaps someone will hear something today.

I thought I posted here about seeing the barn, like dutch roof.. it is the kind that is different angels... like my shed roof...and the car will no be found since the drive was hard and not showing tracks.
