KUWAIT CITY (AP) — An Iraqi boat opened fire on two Kuwaiti coast guard vessels in northern Kuwaiti waters Tuesday, the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

The incident took place near the tiny Kuwait island of Warba, the ministry said in a statement.

Nobody was injured by the Iraqi fire but the two Kuwaiti boats collided and one crewman was slightly injured, the ministry added.

The statement did not give the type of Iraqi vessel.

Ties between Kuwait and Iraq have been severed since the 1991 Gulf War that liberated this small oil-rich state from a seven-month Iraqi occupation.

The borders between the two countries are closed and monitored by the United Nations.

The firing took place as U.N. monitors inspect sites in Iraq for possible weapons of mass destruction.
