why are there few traced earthquakes in NY; and even when a earthquake is detected in NY why is it never really high on the ricter scale???

This is because we live in an area that has very few plates are meeting. We have fault lines but they will not cause many earthquakes unless the are rather new. The fault lines that lay around n.y state and ontario are rather old. Also we live in a region that is that mountainless compared to other places. For instance, look at the pacific rim. The mountain ranges around that are gigantic (eg rockies, andes) and they are full of volcanoes because of the plates making contact. There are volcanic ranges in ontario such as abibiti but there you will only find volcanic rock. I think that the highest ever recorded in years around this area was in Niagrara falls in 98. It was recoreded at 5.1 We do have the appalachien but they are not created by the same ways that other mountain ranges were created. I hope this info will be some help for you. andrew
