desperately wanting to start a homestead

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

Oh, I am so glad to see this forum!!! I have been researching some homesteading techniques for a while and I just could not find anywhere to ask a real person all my questions. This is such a relief-and I saw there is another Wisconsinite who posts here-so exciting! Well, like I said I have been reseaching some things-alternative energy sources, alternative heating, alternative building practices-I even looked into composting toilets! My question is there are so many different schools of thought and different systems and ways to implement those systems-how do you know which is right, safest and best for you and your family? I have started looking for land in Southwest WI and I think we may have found a suitable piece, we just have to get financing for it-any suggestions on that? And then we wanted to build our own home-how do you get around all of the codes and regulations? There is just so much out there-I'm hoping someone can help me navigate this enourmous undertaking. Thanks-Jean

Hi Jean,

Well, Hello, and welcome. I am not the moderator, but I love to be here.... and all my friends here. I hope you will come back soon....

As for your question, My advise is to take it one thing at a time. Start with finding fiancing for the land. Dont think about anything else, JUST THAT... I know that will be hard, you sound like we did, but we just got here 3 weeks ago, and believe it or not, we were where you are now, 11 months ago. Ask anyone here, they will tell you , TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME....

All the blessings I can pray down for you, Kristean Thompson
