December 24, 2002 -- Movies: free fun for Barbra

BARBRA Streisand's shocking sense of entitlement is the stuff of legend at a movie theater near her Malibu mansion.

A former employee at the Mann 8 Agoura Hills Cinema Center says Streisand has a reputation for demanding free tickets, popcorn and soda.

"More than once she showed up and demanded to be let in for free," says our source. "One time last summer she said, 'Do you know who I am?' when she was charged for a ticket. The guy behind the ticket counter said, 'Of course I do. But it's our policy to charge everyone.' Then she demanded to see the manager, who let her in for free."

Our source says celebs like Will Smith, Britney Spears, Pam Anderson, Wesley Snipes and Hulk Hogan have all plunked down $9.50 to watch a movie at the Malibu Canyon Road cinema without incident.

"Some of them would ask if they could go into the movie after it started to avoid fans, but nobody except Barbra ever said, 'I'm not going to pay,' " says our source. "I think now there's a standing order to just let her in for free."

But Streisand's spokesman, Dick Guttman, insists she always offers to pay. "It's not unusual for a star to call ahead and reserve access," he told us yesterday. "A few weeks ago, she called the manager, Joseph Lapore, and asked to reserve tickets for her and some guests.

"He offered to comp her but she said, 'That's not necessary.' But he insisted. Theaters in Malibu issue passes to a lot of the stars. It's just a courtesy. Some people can negotiate crowds easily but Barbra's fans are very enthusiastic."

Lapore backed up Guttman's story, and claimed that he comped Streisand only so she wouldn't have to wait in the lobby and be swarmed by fans.

"I didn't think it was a good idea for her to wait in the lobby to pick up tickets," he said. "Her office insisted on her paying but I decided against it. She's always been a paying customer."

In fact, our source was describing an incident last summer - not last month. But Lapore, who has been on the job for a few months, assures us, "We've never had a problem with her."

Even if Streisand is a cheapskate when it comes to movie tickets, she spares no expense when it comes to air-conditioning her many homes.

Far from following her own energy conservation advice (she wants fellow Californians to turn their thermostats to 78 degrees when they're home, and 85 when they're out), Babs kept her Central Park West pad at bone-chilling temps, The Post's Braden Keil reported last year.
