CNBC, WSJ BRAWL By TIM ARANGO

January 4, 2003 -- Relations between CNBC and its partner Dow Jones are increasingly fractured, The Post has learned.

Yesterday CNBC canceled the "Wall Street Journal Editorial Board with Stuart Varney," which aired on Friday evenings and featured a round-table discussion of Journal editors debating the issues of the day.

The show had been in limbo for some time - for three straight weeks in December CNBC decided to pre-empt the show - but in a statement yesterday the Journal said, "CNBC and the Journal failed to agree on the future direction of the program."

Spokespeople for both companies say there are no plans for another similar show. The Journal is clearly irked by the decision and has set up a Web site for viewers of the show to rant about it being canceled.

Varney, meanwhile, will likely leave the network: He is currently negotiating with several other networks, according to a source.

Fox and The Post are both owned by News Corp.

Since 1997 CNBC and Dow Jones have had an extensive alliance, which includes the Journal providing reporters for on-air commentary on CNBC. The companies are also 50/50 owners of CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia.

But the tensions between the two companies go beyond the cancellation of the editorial board show, The Post has learned. more
