JAY BLAIR's war mongering statement

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Just want to be able to find this statement more easily next time I need to share it with folks. I don't want anyone be unaware of what we're dealing with here.

EM, I am a supporter of war machines. I work in the defense contract industry to provide better ways of war and we need a target. Saddam is as good as any other. I need the activity to enhance my lifestyle. Just personal choice as your choice is the hippie culture. You want peace for you to enjoy yourself, I want war to enjoy myself. I am just your oppisite number.Without opposition, there is no cause, only boredom. But the more you folks complain, the more determined the powers to be will proceed ahead, The more we continue ahead, the more active you will protest. Our positions fuel each other. While you embrace the world, I like to see the boot on the throat to establish political superiority. I don't expect to ever change your views and know you will never alter mine. I do however support your right to protest it and appreciate the fact that you are adding fuel to the flames. Look on the bright side, the stimulated economy will fund our domestic problems. Take care and enjoy all to come. -- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), September 26, 2002. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't figure Jay out. One day he's sweet, kind, and understanding and the next day he's completely the opposite. I don't know what it is, but I for one am not going to spend any more energy wondering what is up with him.

Cant figure it out. Simple, I dont share your views on the matter.

I'm thinking that there are moral issues here that aren't being directly addressed as such.

To my way of thinking it wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn Saddam has indeed been making weapons of mass destruction. If "we" can't prove it, we're between a diplomatic rock and a hard place. I'm completely opposed to unilateral action against Iraq, mostly because it would be unilateral and without global concensus and support. Its supremely stupid to assume the role of global bully, merely because we think we can get away with it. The long term ramifications of such an approach would likely make us a global pariah.

Jay seems to me to be an economic Darwinist. And while it may sound good to some there are serious shortcomings in such an approach, at least in the long run.

One of the biggest problems with it that I see is they say power corrupts. With the USA being the only "super power", the controlling oligarchy---read multinational corporations---will NOT have the best interests of the general population in mind when they shape public policy. Their prime directive is to make money for their stock holders in just about any way they can get away with. That means, among other things, a suppression of competition with our tax dollars paying for the priveledge of being screwed into the ground, and markets "created" by government fiat, thus the war machine.

Talk is cheap when you're at the top of the food chain but human nature will not be supressed forever and the "oppressed" will rear up eventually and the USA will be their target.

Jay my friend you are simply okay with me no matter what your opinion is!! Thats the way it should be. How bout we stop the Goddamn personal attacks around here?......Kirk

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2003

I second Kirk's opinion . . . we all have personal views, some which might clash with anothers. That's the way of the world.

I've probably at one time or another disagreed with everyone over a detail / comment made at one time (as I'm sure everyone has had with mine, on occasion), but I don't let it bother me. Get over it - life is too short to let WORDS bother one so.

Live and let live, okay?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2003

What "personal attacks" are you referring to?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2003

EM and JOJ, respectfully I am stating that I think dredging up something which caused a bit of strife within our forum and making it a separate post could be likened to an attack. I don't agree with Jay but as JR said he's entitled to his opinion. I'm not quite sure what the point of bringing this up again was supposed to accomplish.

As EM would say, "peace". And I mean that!

Denise, I agree that he's entitled to his opinion. I also am entitled to mine, which is that his attitude is psychopathic. I wish he'd go away; perhaps to return after years of couselling, if the couselling were successful.

I don't see how quoting someone's own words-words he's stood behind after the fact, even-should be viewed as a "personal attack". I think it's more of a personal example.

-- Anonymous, January 08, 2003

Yes, JOJ. I totally agree that you are also entitled to your opinion. BUT making a specific post about something which was upsetting and has come and gone is pointless to me. It's singling someone out for having a different opinion than most at this board. It's sort of like being a bully. And I've never thought you to be a bully JOJ. I usually agree with you and enjoy your wisdom. Wishing he would go away doesn't make it so. It doesn't make it so here OR in the real world. It seems to me it is best to know your opposition. Remember we are supposed to be a board that is supportive of diversity.

Hey, I don't want ANY of you folks to "go away"!! As much as I totally disagree with Jay, I still like to read about his gardening techniques and his worms...just like I enjoy reading about "Orygun" :-)!! An interesting debate is one thing, but can we please keep it nice? As j.r. said..."life is too short"!!!

Hey! If anyone wants to know who Jay is just go back and read about 100 of his past posts! What you find is an articulate, witty, respectful, creative human being. This is Jay for crap sakes! He has been around these boards as long as all of us and he's part of our family. I absolutly can't believe he is being treated like this over something he said in the heat of the moment. What are we turning into around here the damn GREEN moral police or something?....Kirk

-- Anonymous, January 08, 2003

Agreed Kirk. I really don't agree with Jay on this subject either but his behavior has consistantly been above board and respectful. This is a FORUM. We should be able to discuss this stuff rationally without getting too upset, understanding people will have different opinions.

I understand the point Jay makes too but I still don't agree with him.

Kirk and John, if you have not already read (or re-read) the thread that JOJ is citing, please do so before reading the rest of my post here.

Kirk, I think you were absent when this was going on. Many of us who thought we "knew" Jay were shocked down to our toes by his statements. And, NO, those words were NOT said "in the heat of the moment" -- they were cold and calm and long entrenched. Just ask him if he in any way has changed his mind. He just didn't reveal those facets before then.

I certainly have not changed my mind about what I posted in that thread. That said, I suggest that we stop arguing about this. Jay is what he is, and talking about it isn't going to change him, nor get rid of him. We apparently lost Wildman over that thread. Let's not repeat that with Kirk!

Just let it pass. No need to make it bigger than what it is. Some are just overly sensitive to the fact that we arnt all clones of each other. This is just what happens when you have open discussions by people of different opinions and the steadfastness to remain true to their values. The current mix of liberal, conservative and anarchical posters, coupled with the lack of non political postings have all added to the tension. At present I appear to be the only conservative republican on board here and as anyone else, I have my views and present them. Since I come here to share information and views and an ocassional friendly debate, I don't concern myself as some do when opposition occurs. I maturely accept the fact that a difference of opinion exists, which the less mature among us cannot tolerate. While I am content to allow differences to pass into obscurity, often the less secure among us will use the difference to attempt to garner approval and support for themselves. I know that in all likelyhood, I would not associate with most here in real life, as it would be highly unlikely that I would find myself in the same social environment as others here. I do, however , enjoy sharing agronomic knowledge with the posters on this site. Unfortunately, the thread content here has veered away from the type that appeal to me in July or Aug to what is being currently presented. While personally avoiding to post such threads myself, I have no qualms whatsoever to posting my opinion in response to positions with which I do not agree. I do choose to generalize my statements as much as possible without singling out one particular individual. Often, I simply choose to ignore posters if they appear too over zealous. Hopefully, with the coming of spring and a few new participants, the thread topics will once again return to topics which we can all participate in without heated arguements.

Spring always brings new beginnings...:-)!!

Marcia, I already got indian corn growing in my environmental chamber (20 stalks) to produce more seeds for fall harvest crop.

Hey Jay,

Nope, you're not the only conservative, Republican here. I am too and a Christian to boot :-). Back when I joined this forum I thought it was headed in a different direction than it has taken and along the way I just decided to pretty much stay out of any political discussions. But alas, as of this moment, you may NOW be the only one left - ha ha.

I just want to say a quick goodbye to all here as I have decided to stay off internet forums (at least for a LONG while) and spend all that extra time with my youngest, trying to give him some excellent memories of great times. Sending you all wishes for great and happy futures!!

Terry
