(Oakland-AP) -- Presidential candidate the Reverend Al Sharpton was a no-show in Oakland yesterday.

The president of Oakland's N-Double-A-C-P says Sharpton agreed a year ago to speak at a conference for young people.

Shannon Reeves says he cancelled at the last minute after being offered a large fee from a black newspaper publishers meeting in Beverly Hills.

Reeves says people were disappointed by Sharpton's absence, but other speakers filled the gap.

Five-hundred people attended the two-day N-Double-A-C-P's Self-Help conference.
