advertisement Click here to find great bargains! STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Sen. Joseph Lieberman, freed of his self-imposed pledge to defer to Al Gore, is running for president in 2004, saying in an advance copy of his speech that the nation needs leaders "ready to lead."

The senator, the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2000, was making the announcement of his candidacy Monday morning at his former high school. Copies of the announcement were distributed in advance of his appearance.

"Two years ago, we were promised a better America, but that promise has not been kept," said the text of his speech to students at Stamford High School.

He said the nation can "renew the American dream. ... if our leaders are ready to lead, willing to fight for what's right for the American people and able to rise above partisan politics to put our country first."
